Caring for Your Artificial Grass Lawn

One of the major advantages of installing a synthetic lawn in your home is that it dramatically diminishes the amount of upkeep you need to do. Gone are the days of having to mow and edge your grass, along with the regular watering and fertilizing needed to keep your lawn looking sharp. Installing an artificial turf lawn simplifies your life.

This doesn’t mean that artificial grass lawns are completely carefree. In order to keep your artificial lawn looking great for years, you do need to do some routine maintenance occasionally. Don’t worry -- the upkeep you need to do is nowhere as rigorous as what you would need to do with natural grass lawns. Here are a few of the steps that you should take to get the most out of your new artificial grass lawn.

Add Water -- But Only Occasionally: You don’t need to water your synthetic lawn several times a week in the same way that you need to do with a natural grass lawn. However, spraying your turf with water every week or two does have its benefits. Hosing down your lawn can help to clean out fine particles of dust, dirt and debris that can settle between the blades of grass on your lawn. Watering your turf lawn also keeps the blades from getting “crunchy” which can lead an unpleasant feeling and sound when you step on your lawn.

Fire Up the Blower: Organic materials such as dirt, sticks, pieces of leaves and even dead bugs can start to rot at the root of your artificial grass lawn if left too long. The best way to combat this is by cleaning your lawn on a regular basis. Using a rake is one way to do this, but a more powerful method is with a leaf blower. Just go over your lawn once and you can be assured that the organic materials will be removed.

Kill Weeds: It might be surprising to learn that weeds can grow in an artificial turf lawn just like they can in a natural turf lawn. It’s true -- weeds can take root almost anywhere if there is moisture and a place for them to grow. And just like with natural grass, it can be extremely difficult to get rid of a pesky weed problem. Regularly cleaning your lawn -- either with water or a blower -- will help to prevent weeds. So will using special herbicides designed to be used with synthetic lawns.
